The Black Box App (Research, Branding & Identity, UX/UI Design)

An app-based product aimed at fighting the effects of fatigue and jet lag in airline crew.

Airline crews are subject to extreme working conditions, very demanding both physically and mentally. This product results from several months of market research and interviews. Several hundred airline crew members were interviewed and the need for a tool to help them overcome the effects of fatigue arose.

The product synchs the crew member’s roster and calculates resting and activity times through a simple algorithm, generating a set of personalized outputs catering to their preferences and needs. its ultimate goal is to create activities and goals to make the job easier, lessen the impact of fatigue and jet lag on flight safety and improve the quality of life of the users.

Research, User Flows & Iterations.

The research evaluated insight from close to a thousand airline crew members, as well as in-depth interviews with fifteen individuals scattered around the globe. The outcome was fairly unanimous, with the majority of the stakeholders pointing out that fatigue, different time zones, and hence the lack of physical fitness and mental clarity impaired them from making good decisions and adapting to a healthier lifestyle.

After the concept was finalized, the priority was to create a product that would take into account the mental and physical state of the user. A product that would gamify the process leading to the final output and reduce to a minimum the number of steps needed for that output was a strong contender for a fully functioning tool.

Concepts that incorporated a more detailed user flow proved too complicated and demoted users from finalizing benefiting the product, prompting the team to be more specific in a second round of research.
